It’s refreshing to find a restaurant that was created from head-to-toe as a way to introduce the spirit of a culture to the customer. For this reason, The Dhaba Café in Tempe is without a doubt one of the best India food restaurants in the Valley. Providing guests with food and an ambiance that directly concentrates on bringing a particular region of Northern India (Punjab) to life, The Dhaba Café is a must dine for Indian foodies. Owner Raveen Arora, Manager Tony Felsianes, and Executive Chef Talwinder Dhaliwal have combined to offer superb food and service at stop 26 on the Metro Light Rail off of Apache Blvd in Tempe. They have stayed true to their accommodating cultural vision by providing fine dining Punjabi cuisine that is accessible to the everyday person at no more than $15 per menu item. Punjabi food is a melting pot of cuisines from Afghanistan, Persia, and parts of Asia. In India and Pakistan, highways are filled with roadside restaurants called Dhabas’. These eateries are popular stops for truck drivers and local people. Dhabas’ are traditionally filled with cots (chaarpal in Hindi), and were the inspiration for the name of the restaurant. Arora and crew named the restaurant after these truck stops in hopes that guests would be able to feel casual while eating fine food. Every item in the Thali or “whole meal experience” is like a work of art. When you order a Thali meal, you can pick what you want as your courses or leave the meal in the hands of the trusted chefs. Everyone eating at the restaurant gets complimentary crispy lentil wafers or papadum, served with three different sauces that start off the robust flavors you will continue to experience throughout your meal. The house salad is was filled with fresh mango, red peppers, cantaloupe, cucumbers, and topped with delicious mango vinaigrette. Main courses are like those typically found in fine dining restaurants in Northern India. The Dhaba lamb curry is filled with perfectly tender meat blended with spices, a cauliflower and a potato spiced ‘dish of the day’, or allogobhi in Hindi. The numberdar saag chicken is perfectly spiced and blended with spinach. All the tastes are accompanied by a spiced up balsmati rice that mixes well with all the other flavors. The menu items cooked in the tandoor ovens are a way for someone to truly capture the specific taste and specialty of the Punjabi region. The chicken cooked in the tandoor is delicious, but has slightly milder flavors than the rest of the meal. Traditional Indian food is usually served with naan or bread, which can be used to soak up curry or accompany your meal. The garlic naan is perfectly cooked and flavored with a good amount of garlic that beautifully balances the contrast of the bread’s flavor. Going to eat at the Dhaba Cafe and not getting desert would be letting yourself down. Unlike other Indian deserts, which can be a little to unique for some pallets, the desserts here are as delightfully pleasing on the eye as they are in your mouth, and Tony makes a new specialty, aftermeal delicacy every day. Overall, the restaurant is a must taste. Hop on the light-rail or simply drive to the slightly hidden Dhaba Café for a culinary experience outside of a typical Indian buffet. While you’re there, check out The India Plaza Grocery Store that attaches to it. Here you can find spices and specialty items you can’t find at many places in The Valley.
