Not Forgotten is Unforgettable Thriller

Paganism, Santeria, and Voodoo have always intrigued me. That is why the new film Not Forgotten grabbed my attention from the opening scene. While grizzly, the first few minutes lay the ground work for what is to come. The story is set in the Texas border town of Del Rio. It’s a charming little place, complete with a bustling central square. The people seem friendly enough, but the looks on some of their faces may prove otherwise. In Del Rio reside Jack and Amaya (Simon Baker and Paz Vega). They live a seemingly quiet life; Jack is active in the community, involved in the Chamber of Commerce and his eleven year-old daughter Toby’s (Chloe Moretz) soccer team. All is well until Toby goes missing from soccer practice, and is thought to be the victim of a kidnapping. The police have a suspect in mind, yet many in Del Rio are under scrutiny, as this seemingly perfect town has a secret; several of the townsfolk may be involved in “Santa Muerte,” a religion that mixes Pagan rituals with Catholicism. It has been condemned by the church as devil worship, but its popularity in Mexico continues to grow and spread across the border. While the police continue their search to no avail, Jack and Amaya cross the border where they meet with a bedridden spiritual woman in a home filled with religious symbols. From here, the story continues to unravel and we learn more about Santa Muerte and more about the characters. Paz Vega is perfectly cast and Simon Baker delivers a surprisingly powerful performance. Chloe Moretz could easily be the next child actor to watch. She is adorable in this film and further shows her acting talent in the upcoming Fox Searchlight release (500) Days of Summer, which is poised to be this summer’s sleeper hit. Not Forgotten is being released on a limited run, and is opening exclusively in Phoenix at the AMC Deer Valley 30. It is a shame that more audiences will not get a chance to see what could quite easily be one of the best thrillers of the year, based on a unique script and creepy visuals that just may keep you up at night.
