FROM ‘AINTS’ TO ‘SAINTS’

New Orleans Saints Champions of Super Bowl XLIV

Many football fans, leading with their head, viewed the Indianapolis Colts as the better team coming into Super Bowl XLIV. But when all the multicolored confetti had rained down on Sun Life Stadium, after the New Orleans Saints took down the favored Colts 31-17, the game turned out to be about heart. After the Saints won their first National Football League championship -- 43 years after they played their first game -- they talked about the once-ravaged city they represent. “We play for so much more than ourselves,” said Saints quarterback Drew Brees with his brown hair matted to his forehead. “We played for our city.

We played for the entire Gulf Coast region. We played for the entire Who Dat nation that has been behind us every step of the way.” Brees referenced trying to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina -- and a football franchise, too. Burn those bags. Put the S back in front of those Ain’ts. These Saints, finally, are Superb. “It means everything,” Brees said. “We’re here because of their strength and everything they fought through here the last few years. They’ve given us so much support, so we owe it all to our fans.”

Some 700 miles away from Sun Life Stadium, it was All Saints Night on Bourbon Street as the French Quarter rocked with something approaching Mardi Gras intensity. “Just to think of the road we’ve all traveled, the adversity we’ve all faced,” Brees said. “It’s unbelievable. I mean, are you kidding me? Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening? Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back. “We just all looked at one another and said, ‘We’re going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.’ That’s what we’ve done the last four years and this is the culmination in all that belief.”

SPEED VS. GUNS BLAZING

‘Saints and Colts Set the Stage for Super Bowl XLIV’

With New Orleans about to make its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, memories of Hurricane Katrina still lingering and close ties between the team and the city’s rebuilding effort, Colts players understand why the Saints are this year’s sentimental favorite. They just want to play the role of spoiler. “There’s a reason America is pulling for New Orleans, and why wouldn’t they? They’ve been through a lot,” Indy safety Antoine Bethea said. “Sports tend to pull people together, so it’s commendable for New Orleans to be, as I guess you’d say, America’s team right now. But at the same time, we’re going to go out there as the Indianapolis Colts and play ball.” The reach of New Orleans’ fans goes all the way to the highest levels of the White House. “You know, I think both teams are terrific,” President Barack Obama told ABC News. “I guess I am rooting a little bit for the Saints as the underdog, partly just because when I think about what’s happened in New Orleans over the last several years and how much that team means to them.

You know, I’m pretty sympathetic.” The Colts know they’re still the favorite in at least one state, Indiana. “He’s entitled to his opinion and why wouldn’t he be rooting for them?” Bethea said of Obama’s decision to cheer for New Orleans. “Like I said, the city has been through a lot. But the Colts, man, we’re going to go down there and give them a

The Game at a Glance.... » Last meeting: Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes as the Colts handled the Saints with ease in a 41-10 home victory on Kickoff Weekend in 2007. » Series: The series is even at 5-5. » Last week: The Colts held the Jets’ top-ranked rushing attack to 86 yards in a 30-17 win at home. ... The Saints advanced on the leg of Garret Hartley, whose 40-yarder in overtime sealed the 31-28 win over Minnesota.

A potential shootout: Only one player threw for more touchdowns than Manning (33) in the regular season -- Drew Brees, with a leagueleading 34. Indy’s second-ranked passing offense will be pitted against the Saints’ 26th-ranked pass defense, while the Saints’ fourth-ranked aerial attack will contend with the 14th-ranked pass defense of the Colts. There should be no shortage of touchdowns through the air in this one.

The experience factor: Much of the attention will be focused on Manning attempting to cement his legacy with a second Lombardi Trophy, but the Colts have a number of important players who were with the team for Super Bowl XLI. Among the Colts players who own Super Bowl rings are Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis and Jeff Saturday. The Saints, on the other hand, have limited Super Bowl experience. Randall Gay played in two of the Patriots’ four visits to the big game, starting against the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, while Darren Sharper was a rookie with the following the 1997 season.

Speed vs. speed: With the likes of Reggie Bush and Devery Henderson, the Saints field one of the quickest offenses in the league. But the Colts counter with a defense that relies more on its speed than it does size. The Colts have young legs in the likes of WRs Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, but they will have to be wary of ball-hawking Saints safety Sharper, who can still find that extra gear in his 13th season.

Did you know? The last time both No. 1 seeds reached the Super Bowl was 1993 when the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13. ... The Saints are making their first Super Bowl appearance in the franchise’s 43-year history. ... Dating back to when the franchise was in Baltimore, all four of the Colts’ Super Bowl appearances have taken place in Miami.

GOPHERS/CYCLONES HAVE DESERT INSIGHT

Iowa State vs. Minnesota INSIGHT BOWL December 31, 2009 ASU Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ Separated by just over 200 miles, Iowa State and Minnesota will travel roughly the same distance to the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. The journey was significantly longer for the Cyclones. One year removed from a 10-loss season, Iowa State is set to play in its first postseason game in four years when it faces the Golden Gophers at Sun Devil Stadium on Dec. 31. The Cyclones (6-6) seem to be one of the more unlikely recipients of a bowl invitation following last season’s debacle. Iowa State dropped its final 10 games and was outscored by an average of 19.8 points in eight Big 12 losses. Things appeared to get even worse when Coach Gene Chizik left for Auburn just weeks after the season ended. The Golden Gophers (6-6) are making their third Insight Bowl appearance in four years. They lost to Kansas 42-21 last season and dropped a 44-41 overtime game to Texas Tech in 2006. Despite the close proximity between Iowa State and Minnesota and the intense rivalry each school has with Iowa, this will be the first meeting between these programs since the Gophers’ 53-29 victory at the Metrodome in 1997. Minnesota leads the series 22-2-1 and hasn’t lost to the Cyclones since 1898, yet they’ve only met twice since 1924. For more information and ticket sales visit www.insightbowl.com

Texas Christian vs. Boise State FIESTA BOWL January 4, 2010 University of Phoenix Stadium Glendale, AZ No. 3 TCU and No. 6 Boise State will meet in the Fiesta Bowl, marking the first time a BCS game other than the championship game had a matchup of unbeaten teams. It’s also the first time two teams from conferences without automatic bids to the BCS have played in the five big-money bowls in the same season. Mountain West champion TCU (12-0) earned an automatic bid to become a BCS buster for the first time in school history. Western Athletic Conference champ Boise State (13-0) became the first team from a non-automatic qualifying conference to receive an at-large bid. This time, the so-called little guys will move their tussle to the big stage -- and the Fiesta Bowl doesn’t mind staging a rematch, which has got a thumbs-up from TV partner Fox. They might want to roll back the roof at Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium on Jan. 4, because the game should provide plenty of offensive fireworks. Confessions of a Steelers Fan
Written by Kevin Lambert on Friday, 06 February 2009 21:33

I have a confession to make: As the sports writer for AZ Weekly, I have composed all different colors of Arizona Cardinal articles, from the hopelessly tragic meltdowns (Bears, Monday night) to the apocalyptic insinuations of their improbable ’09 run to Super Bowl XLIII. I have lived in Arizona for nearly 9 years, and until three weeks ago, I considered myself among the team’s more optimistic followers. By nature of my occupation, I ingratiated myself to real Cardinals fans by way of spot-on statistical recitation. I admire and celebrate the talents and character of guys like Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Adrian Wilson, and Darnell Dockett. I was touching the boundaries of real Cardinal fan-dom, hoping and cheering against all plausibility that this historical underdog would put Arizona on the NFL map for the first time. Three weeks ago, however, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

Do You Believe?

Tampa Bay, FL- Decades of losing and the jokes that come with them are fading into the eagerly forgotten past; predictions have been firmly etched by pundits; final walk-throughs are taking place at practice facilities seized by electric anticipation; and the shock that has befallen ecstatic Valley fans is just now wearing off. It is time for the Arizona Cardinals to play a football game; to prove themselves one last time before this magical season ends. The over-achieving Red Birds are set to do battle in Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium on February 1st with the vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers, who bring a fierce reputation for leaving everything on the fieldincluding injured opponents- to Super Bowl XLIII. This season, the Steel Curtain legacy was in lively form as the black and gold laid waste to opposing offenses, averaging just over 80 yards allowed on the ground and less than 157 yards through the air. Conversely, the Cardinals averaged 365.8 total yards of offense per game, so obviously something will have to give come Sunday.

The two teams are arriving in Tampa having realized contrasting internal transitions from the regular to post season: The Cardinals have been scoring prolifically all year, and when they won it was usually attributable to an offensive onslaught that the opponent could not overcome, while the defense played well enough to get the ‘W’. The Steelers have been defending ferociously all year, and when they won it was usually attributable to a brutal stomping that the opponent could not overcome, while the offense played well enough to get the ‘W’. In the post season, the story of the Cardinal’s ascension has been a ball-hawking, punishing defense, though their offense remained precise and efficient; while the Steelers have rediscovered the scoreboard in QB Ben Roethlisberger’s spontaneous ability to create, and the defense has stayed rock solid.
