KEVIN WILSON – SELF PORTRAIT (INDEPENDENT)
Independent guitarist Kevin Wilson’s ‘Self Portrait’ consists of 2 CD’s: one a very laid back, early-mid 90’s affair that harkens Toad The Wet Sprocket / Counting Crows meets late 80’s early 90’s melodic rock inspired compositions. Titles such as “On The Lake”, “Winter In Paradise” and “Words Of A Poet” indicate that you won’t find your typical girl-chasing romp or oh-woe-isme depression of early 90’s grunge era here. The other disc offers more of a grunged-up affair that changes gears dramatically. “Hellhole”, “Angry Again” and “Tale of Woe” tell you this is definitely taking you down a different road than disc 1. As there are 2 different overall approaches here musically, Wilson also enlisted 2 different vocalists for each set. That in itself makes for more diversity than having the same vocalist sing different styles. So that’s worth something. If you’re not into flavor of the month musical styles and current genres, but rather more organic songs that capture a moment in time, this may be up your alley. Although there is obvious talent that shows itself on occasion, one doesn’t get the feeling of anything extremely catchy hookwise. And for some, that’s okay. Not everyone likes their musical tastes, songs and styles pre-programmed and spoon fed. But given the type of material produced here (i.e. melodic music with good melodies), it would seem essential to have the occasional hook to remember it by.
